St George the Martyr

All Events for the Church are listed on the Events Page
St George the Martyr Church is equidistance between North and South Clifton situated on the west side of Church Lane, with the River Trent behind it.
It dates from the 13th Century, although records suggest that there was a church on this site prior to the Norman Conquest.
St George's is a beautiful church with many distinctive architectural and historical features. In particular the Chancel and the North Aisle contain two very well preserved stained glass windows depicting The Last Supper and St George respectively. Here visitors can also see an elaborate Reredos in moulded oak which is beautifully painted depicting the nativity. Work is ongoing to restore the whole wall behind the Altar and the Reredos to its original glory.
The beautiful early display of snowdrops at the front of the church welcomed the commencement of our major essential works and restoration programme in January. The work resulted from recommendations made at our last five-year state of condition report, known as the Quinquennial Report. This includes external and internal essential repairs. This was also required to further weather-proof the church to allow the restoration of the beautiful wall paintings surrounding and over the altar. The PCC debated long and hard about this work from a financial aspect. Put simply, we do not have the money and fund-raising has been severely limited over the last two years because of the pandemic. However, after a lengthy and stressful process we obtained a grant to cover 50% of the costs, but only available if completed within 12 months!! So, the decision was made to go ahead. The work is in process as this article is being written.
Part of the work involved exploring the lifting of the tiles in the chancel, which was a trip hazard as well as cracking existing tiles. Unfortunately, this proved to be more complex than envisaged after some sort of underlying brick-built structure was discovered underneath. This is pictured below and is being examined as this article is written!!!
The work is being very carefully carried out to repair and replace tiles exactly! At the moment it looks like a grand-scale jigsaw, but we have been very impressed with the skill and dedication of the work team.
While this has been ongoing all services have carried on, which has allowed the congregation to observe progress in a building site situation!! This ongoing work has understandably dominated our thinking, resources and
this article. As the current custodians of this beautiful 12th Century church, we are very much aware of our responsibility to maintain this building for future generations as well as ensure it is available to the current community and villages for worship and prayer. Analysis of Church of England data has found that 423 churches were closed between 2010 and 2019, we are determined our church will remain a vital part of our community!!
We will keep you informed of developments and seek your ongoing support for our church and ministry.
Services are held regularly at St George's on the second and fourth Sunday of each month. Everyone is welcome.
